Guidelines for Feeding Co-Products:
• We feeds work especially well when fed in a total mixed ration with low quality cut hay.
• Dry co-products can be used to replace 50%-100% of the grain in high corn silage growing diets.
• Diets containing co-products need supplementation with calcium, trace minerals, vitamins, salt, ionophores, and/or medications.
• During warm weather, wet co-products have limited keeping qualities.
• Adjust rations to account for moisture variation in wet co-products.
• Cattle may suffer from “polio” as a result of a thiamine deficiency. Reasons include:
• A thiamine-destroying enzyme released from bacteria.
• The high sulfur content of co-products may interfere with thiamine metabolism.
Good to Know – Characteristics of Co-Products from the Corn Milling & Distilling Industry:
• It can be fed wet (40% – 60% dry matter) or dry (90% dry matter)
• Very palatable – enhances appetite
• High in protein and phosphorus
• Low in calcium
• Low in rumen bypass protein
• Low in natural thiamine
• High level of sulfur
• Poor source of roughage
• 80% to 110% energy value of corn – depends on the source of Co-Product
